Artists at Boston College: Celebrating 25 Years of Excellence in the Visual Arts

This exhibition celebrates the success of the Studio Art and Film Studies Programs at Boston College by highlighting the artistic achievements of their teachers. The eighteen faculty members whose work is exhibited use a range of media to examine vastly different concerns. Rarely, in the flurry of schoolyear activity, does the Boston College community have the opportunity to see the work that studio art and filmmaking instructors produce as visual artists. Here, we have created the time, space, and occasion to view the images and read about the processes that are the driving force behind these artists' success as teachers.

The Studio Art Program's history began in 1974, when the Educational Policy Committee approved its creation. This decision came at a historic moment for the college as a whole: Boston College was in the process of merging with Newton College of the Sacred Heart, located on the current Newton Campus. Newton College's excellent studio art program, though small, was seen as a fitting complement to Boston College's Fine Arts Department.
